We have just upgraded to FIM 2010 R2 SP1 and are now looking at updating our SQL database from 2008 to 2012. I understand FIM 2010 R2 can be run on SQL 2012 and that it is possible to move FIM databases from one server to another if the version of SQL is the same between the two servers. But what about moving a FIM SQL 2008 DB to SQL 2012 on a different server? Has anyone tried this and if so what steps did you take to get it to work?
My first thought would be to upgrade the FIM DB to SQL 2012 on the server that it currently lives on and then move the DBs to a new SQL DB server. Then use steps similar to what is outlined here (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/5465.reference-how-to-move-the-backend-sql-server-synchronization-service-database.aspx) to point FIM Sync Service to the new DB location. I haven't tried this though and would appreciate a second option.
Thanks
